THE FLAG PROJECT
The Flag Project asked people to create portraits of themselves or of someone from their community, each person was given a piece of fabric to make their own. In a time when our flag is being co-opted by an increasingly hostile government new flags are needed and the faces of the Hackney community have become welcoming heraldic banners. Focusing on waste, each square is scrap fabric that would otherwise have no purpose, the banners are made from dead-stock material and many of the materials people worked with were donations not fit for sale. The textile base offers the opportunity to use multiple mediums from applique and embroidery to painting and pen drawings to encourage differing strengths and skills. Following on thematically from last year’s Lampshade Project all artists are given equal billing.

THE LAMPSHADE PROJECT
The Lampshade Project asked the local community to decorate a number of identical paper shades. Over 250 of these were brought together to create a light installation, with all participants’ work sitting alongside each other, from established artists to those picking up their first Pritt Stick. This places all artists on the same level and encourages the idea of art as collaborative, possible and fun. The paper shade is an inexpensive piece of iconic democratic design seen in many houses and The Project encourages these same principles in how to view and access ‘art’. The playful installation descended the length of the street where it could be viewed by everyone.
